I hav covered the topic of Mobility before but never has it been so prevalent in the IT world as this year. The previous year revealed all the mobile devices in its full glory with Samsung taking most of the credit in introducing multitude of devices ranging from smartphones to tablets and hybrids (Galaxy Note). Even the tablets ranged from several sizes (7" to 10.1").

This, coupled with the premium Apple products meant that 2012 will see an explosion of mobile devices with an enormous appetite for applications and games. Already, Google has defined in its roadmap for Android the amalgamation of its OS for both smartphones and tablets with version 4.0 codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich.

More recently, Intel has entered into an agreement to jointly develop an open source mobile OS with Samsung (hint : MeeGo)... This meant that Microsoft will see another competing mobile platform this year which might be a threat if the Microsoft-Nokia partnership doesn't ramp up significantly by the second half of the year.

Before I jump to the apps, I would like to describe the current (Jan 2012) major OS platforms and their market share. This will enable you to appreciate the vast prospects and opportunity lying in the mobile world now. First off, the before-mentioned Android OS, owned by Google and free for all to use.

This OS has been deployed in so many devices that it is unthinkable how Google could profit if it decides to charge. However, due to copyright infringements, Microsoft has managed to collect royalty off the Android platform.

Moving on to the iOS, the seemingly dominating and favorite device of almost all smartphone and tablet users as witnessed by the rampant sales of iPhones and iPads globally. The fact that anytime that Apple breaths of a new devices, the whole world will pause and wait to see the innovations that the device will deliver.

Already, the previously launched iPhone 4S with iOS 5 boasted of Siri, the much hyped about voice-enabled personal assistant. Recently, there have also been rumours of the iPad3 which will feature definitely a bigger improvement over its predecessors.

The Windows Phone platform has seen dwindling market share since Microsoft decided to revamp the entire Windows Mobile OS, it has hurt them in terms of adoption of its latest mobile OS. Coupled with a not-so-encouraging specs that comes with the Windows Phone devices (single core, 512 mb ram, no external SD card), this has not encouraged many buyers. all that is about to change after the latest Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where the Nokia Lumia 900 was voted the best new smartphone in CES.

Last but not least, there are the other OSes such as RIM's Blackberry, Samsung's Bada and Symbian (yes .. they are still around).

With that covered, let's look at the mobile apps scene. With the proliferation of app stores / marketplaces from several major platform owners as well as the 'unofficial' ones, there seems to be a huge explosion of apps for all mobile devices. Essentially, as of last year, most of the apps were targeted at the smartphone form factors but i believe this year there will be a major push for tablet apps as well with Google preparing to deploy their Android of the Ice Cream Sandwich variety.

Here's a list of what's available :

1. Apple iTunes App Store
2. Android Marketplace
3. Samsung Apps
4. Windows Phone Marketplace
5. Apptrackr
6. Andguru
7. Apktops

(Stay tuned for the next article where I will write on the app development process and highlight the differences between the app stores).

Moving on, i want to focus on the business proposition posed by the different app stores. Already, there are several main app publishers who have deployed their applications in multiple platforms such as EverNote, WhatsApp, Adobe Reader, Comic Reader Mobi.

No doubt, the way to profitablity and revenue earning is to publish in all the major mobile platforms. Surprisingly though, most of these useful apps are free !! :) Some of these apps operate on the donation model where users who are satisfied with the app will donate to the app publishers, usually via PayPal.

Of course, no figure has been obtained about the amount of 'donations' that were given to the app publishers. For as far as i know, they could be multi-millionaires by now :)

Note !! : Found a site through wmpoweruser.com that showed how much a WP7 developer can make in a year ... check it out at http://adf.ly/4qxpz

Again, that's the beauty of the entire mobile app eco-system. Most of it run on the donation model and it works to provide users a better experience using the various apps available. That's what I call continuous improvement. This satisfies two desires, one the developer's satisfaction in developing the app and second, to earn some money to keep on improving the app.

That's it for now on mobility and apps ... like i mentioned, please stay tuned for my next article on Technology Trends :)
