As the title suggests, this animation movie is about Bruce Wayne in his first year as Batman after coming back from abroad. For those who are not aware, this movie is based on the comic book series of the same title printed way back in 1987.
![]() At the same time Bruce Wayne returns to his birthplace, James Gordon also moves to Gotham with his wife, Barbara. Both Bruce Wayne and James Gordon encounters the bleaker side of Gotham City with respective events shaping their destinies that will eventually bind them together on the same path.
The classic moment when Bruce Wayne invents his alter-ego is also depicted with a bat crashing through his window when he's searching for guidance.
Similarly, we see the 'tougher' side of James Gordon in dealing with corruption and his peer as well as team mates. I will not spoil the storyline here by going into the events that transpired. ![]() Another character that appears in this movie is Selina Kyle, later to be known as Catwoman. She's apparently a dominatrix prostitute who eventually becomes a thief.
As the plot progresses, we see Batman gaining more prominence with the Gotham underground and eventually working his way to the top mob boss, Carmine "The Roman" Falcone. At this point, the reigning commissioner of police, Gillian Loeb orders Batman to be taken down at all costs.
![]() We see Harvey Dent becoming Batman's ally while James Gordon gains a partner in the form of Detective Sarah Essen. After several encounters between the Gotham PD and Batman, Batman is finally trapped in a building with a SWAT team loyal to Loeb. Of course, Batman doesn't surrender so easily and overcomes the SWAT team. However, innocent by-standers are injured and Batman barely escapes with his life by 'calling' on his army of bats.
After this, the focus swings to Gordon who ends up having an affair with his partner. Loeb somehow gets wind of this and blackmails Gordon. Eventually however, Gordon confesses the affair to his wife. Gordon then tries to mend his family relationship after Essen leaves Gotham.
![]() In the meantime, Batman has recovered from his injuries and proceeds to obtain information from Falcone in his manor. He manages to get information on Falcone's plan with Catwoman's help and heads out to thwart Falcone's plan.
![]() Gordon is summoned out from his apartment but finds something amiss when a motorcyle rider passes him. He turns back toward his apartment and finds Johnny Viti, Falcone's nephew holding Barbara Gordon captive. After unsucessfully negotiating with Vitti, Gordon shoots Vitti and his accomplices but Vitti manages to escape with Gordon's baby. Gordon then goes on to chase Vitti.
Batman aka Bruce Wayne arrives on the scene only to see Vitti escaping so he joins in the chase as well. The final confrontation occurs on a bridge where Gordon manages to blow out Vitti's car tires. Gordon then fights with Vitti still holding his baby. Somehow, in the process, James Gordon and Vitti falls over the bridge with Gordon Jr. but Bruce Wayne manages to jump and save the baby and lands in the river of mud below.
Gordon tells Bruce Wayne that he is 'blind without his glasses', effectively thanking Bruce Wayne for his saving Gordon Jr.
The final part of the movie is interesting where Loeb is put behind bars with evidence provided by Detective Flass, who was one of Gordon's corrupted team-mates. Gordon standing on a rooftop mentions he is promoted to captain and there is a new threat in town named the Joker. His final words before the ending credits states he's waiting for a friend to come and help :)
